Reflection
The following is an attachment of my History 1700 document analysis assignment on the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. For the assignment I was to be a reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune in 1911. I was to bring the story to the local community and highlight why labor reform is so important using the fire as the focus as my story. I was able, through the use of first hand accounts, newspaper articles, letters, songs, plays, reports, etc. (all documents from that time period) utilize critical thinking skills through assessment of periodic primary sources.
To be honest at first I was facing History as a course that I had to take in order to graduate and in high school that's exactly what it was; I didn't have a choice. In fact that almost put me on the offensive, setting up a barrier that almost prevented me from learning anything important from this history class. What good will this class do for me as a person whose career is working with small children?
What I have learned through this class is that EVERYTHING has a history, even history itself. I learned through this class that one cannot escape history, cannot let go of history and in fact should learn to celebrate it.
